A popular tourist destination in Mussoorie that is quiet and remote is George Everest Peak, which is located around 6 miles from Gandhi Chowk, Mussoorie. It provides breathtaking views of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks as well as expansive vistas of the Doon Valley.
The Park Estate, commonly known as Sir George Everest’s Home and Laboratory, was constructed in 1832. These days the George Everest House and George Everest Peak are famous for camping, picnics, and adventure activities. It is becoming more well-known every day due to its proximity to Dehradun and Mussoorie.
It served as Sir George Everest’s residence and research facility. He served as India’s Surveyor-General between 1830 and 1843. Before retiring to England in 1833, Sir George purchased the Park Estate in Mussoorie, which is located on the western fringe of the city. He stayed here for over ten years.
The segment of the Great Trigonometric Survey of India that ran along the meridian arc from the south of India to Nepal was mainly finished by Sir George.
The first climbers that were successful on Mount Everest were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. To honor Sir George Everest, this peak was later given the name Mount Everest. A panoramic view of the Doon Valley and the snow-covered Himalayan mountains can be seen from the residence, which is located in a strategic location.
The mansion, which is under the control of the Archeological Survey of India, has been abandoned for a very long time. Outside the home, the subterranean water cisterns are still visible. These unprotected, quite deep underground water tanks are located in the front yard and provide a threat to both people and animals, especially when it snows and the ground is wet and slick. The house’s interior is still in good shape. There are now iron grills all over the home to secure it. The house is presently closed off to visitors.
You can enjoy the Trek to George Everest peak. The distance from Sir George Everest’s mansion is only 500 meters upward. The summit may be reached in about 30 minutes, and the path is simple. Beautiful vistas may be seen from there. It is one of the top spots for enjoying the sunset and the sunrise. So, whenever planning a trip around Dehradun, don’t forget to pay a visit to George Everest Peak in Mussoorie.
