Xiaomi on Tuesday launched several smart devices in India at its Smarter Living 2020. One of these products — no, there are no smartphones in the list — is the Mi Band 4. Wait, that’s not the name. The device is called the Mi Smart Band 4. Xiaomi believes that its latest fitness band has more features, or rather smarter features, and hence wholly deserves the new moniker. Well, we will see.
The Mi fitness bands have always been popular in India. The price is usually right for these products and the feature set basic but appropriate as well as useful. The Mi Smart Band 4 is no exception. In fact, compared to the earlier bands this one is rather feature-rich. It’s neatly designed. And it has an attractive price. The Mi Smart Band 4 comes with a price of Rs 2,299.
The Mi Smart Band 4 sports a neat design and looks classy on the wrist. To me it does. In a way the Mi Smart Band 4 almost looks like the Mi Band 3 minus the curved screen. The Mi Band 3 includes a screen that is curvy on the sides, but the screen in the Mi Smart Band 4 isn’t as curvy. It’s not flat either like the screen in the Mi Band 2. The new Mi Smart Band 4 follows a middle ground and that offers good end-result.
Similar to the previous generation Mi Bands the new one also comes with a removable wrist band that is made of thermoplastic polyurethane — rubber in simple words. There’s a capsule on the Mi Smart Band 4 and that is similar to the Mi Band 3. The capsule includes 3-axis accelerometer and PPG heart rate sensors which allows the band to track activities in real-time and also the heart rate.
The Mi Smart Band 4 comes with a bigger screen compared to the previous generation Mi Band 3. Bigger and much brighter, thanks to the coloured display. Notably, this is the first Mi Band that comes with a coloured screen. All the previous generation Mi Bands have black and white screens.
The Mi Smart Band 4 packs a 0.95-inch AMOLED screen that offers a resolution of 120 x 240 RGB and brightness of up to 400 nits. Users can also adjust the brightness of the screen by heading to the Setting option on the smart band itself.
I mostly had to keep the brightness level to maximum but the good bit is that didn’t affect the battery life much.
In all situations – both indoors and outdoors – I mostly keep the brightness level of the Mi Smart Band 4 to maximum. For a lot of people medium brightness may suffice but because I was also checking emails and reading WhatsApp messages on the Mi Smart Band 4, I needed higher brightness.
Due to the AMOLED screen, the text messages are clear and easily readable on the Band 4. This means I didn’t have to switch to my smartphone every time to check messages or read emails. The Mi Smart Band 4 also alerts users about incoming calls and lets them silent or reject them. The Mi Smart Band 4, similar to the Mi Band 3, still doesn’t let users pick calls. Users will still need their phone to take incoming calls.
Similar to the Mi Band 3 the Mi Smart Band 4 also comes with a Single touch button that helps users navigate – go back and forth, choose an option, change settings and so on. The touch button is easy to use and works very smooth.
The Mi Smart Band 4 is easy to set up and also connect to a smartphone. It is compatible with devices running on Android 4.4 and iOS 9.0 or above. It took around a minute or so to set up Mi Band 4 and connect it to my smartphone.
— Download the Mi Fit app on your smartphone. The application is available on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
— Switch on the Bluetooth of the phone and pair both the devices (Band and the phone).
— Enter details like name, weight, height, among other things to set up the application. This information will let the Band produce better results.
— After connecting the Band with the smartphone, remember to toggle on the options like incoming call, event reminder, alarm, app alerts, idle alert, among others on the MiFit app. Doing so will let the Mi Smart Band 4 to be more productive.ADVERTISEMENT
The Mi Smart Band 4 comes with various smart fitness features. It tracks heart rate. It monitors sleep. It can also track activities like running, cycling, swimming and other outdoor activities in real-time.
To test the heart rate, users will need to switch to the heart monitor screen on the Mi Band 4 by scrolling down on the home page and long-press the touch button. Apart from the heart rate monitoring and calculating distance walked or run, the Mi Smart Band 4 also measures how good or bad is the user’s sleep pattern.
Besides just showing notifications from different apps, and letting users deal with those notifications the Mi Smart Band 4 also comes with additional features like Find Your Phone. This feature lets users find their misplaced phone. The Mi Band 4 also vibrates and alerts users about alarms.
The Mi Band 4 can be controlled using the Mi Fit app. Xiaomi has added a few new features to the Mi Fit app, but overall the application remains unchanged. One of the most interesting features of the Mi Fit app according to me is the night mode which dims the display of the Band 4 automatically at sunset or during the scheduled duration.
In my one week of using the Mi Band 4 I found that the Mi Band 4 manages to capture fairly accurate data as far as the sleep and activity tracking are concerned. In exercise mode, the Band 4 uses GPS data from the paired phone for better distance and heart rate tracking.
Mi Smart Band 4 battery
The previous generation Mi Bands were well known for their great battery life. The scenario remains the same with the Mi Smart Band 4 as well.
After using the Mi Band 4 for a week now I can vouch for the battery of the Mi Band 4. The battery life of the Mi Band 4 is incredible and in my one week of usage, I didn’t have to charge the Band for even once. Notably, I had the heart rate sensor and sleep tracker switched on all the time. Despite that, the Mi Band lasted almost over a week for me. At the end of the week, the Mi Band had 20 per cent battery left.
Should you by the Mi Smart Band 4?
Yes, you should.
For the price, the Mi Smart Band 4 is an incredible product from Xiaomi. The Mi Smart Band 4 is a great value for money smart fitness band. It brings big and bright display, incredible battery life, various smart and fitness features, decent design and so on. For the price tag, the Mi Smart Band 4 is the best smart fitness band available in India right now.
